Mannes College of Music
The Mannes College of Music is one of the premier music schools in NYC rivaling Julliard in prestige. The concert hall is in almost constant use for recitals, recordings and guest performances by some of the biggest names in classical music. Almost all of these performances are free and open to the public. The school sponsors many performance series, including annual chamber and contemporary music festivals. This is a great place to discover young talent and to expand your musical horizons.
Mannes was founded in 1916 by New York Symphony concertmaster David Mannes and his sister Clara. In 1919, the school relocated to East 74th street and finally settled in its current home in 1984. The college began offering a Bachelors degree in 1953 and has never looked back. Today Mannes has one of the most respected conservatory programs in the world.
The buzz of academia is palpable as soon as you walk through the doors of this beautiful building. Students are everywhere and the strains of practicing musicians can be heard from all corners. The upper west side, where Mannes is located, is one of Manhattan's quieter neighborhoods and is always worth a walk around. Central Park in only two blocks east of the school.
