Berkeley Community Theatre |

The Berkeley Community Theatre has no fewer than 3500 seats, a 100'x 55' stage, a 53' orchestra platform on a lift, dual 35mm projectors, and a magnificent vintage 1922-1932 Wurlitzer pipe organ with a total weight of nearly 32 tons. This theatre is one of only a few in the United States with such a complete set of performance capabilities.
Planning for the theatre began in 1935, and construction began in 1941. Due to several construction delays, caused in large part to WWII, the building was not opened to the public until 1950. And it was not until 1991 that the dream of having the great Wurlitzer was fully realized. All told, the work to install the massive organ occupied 55,000 person-hours.
A theatre goer cannot help but be overwhelmed by a feeling of nostalgia for this space and what it meant to the people who were fortunate enough to witness a live show back in the days past. Enjoy this wonderful space, there aren't too many left like it.
